Massacre of Innocents
Written: ~600 BC→Fulfilled: ~4 BC
Jeremiah's lament over the Babylonian exile was typologically fulfilled in Herod's slaughter of infants in Bethlehem.
Prophecy & Fulfillment
Old Testament Prophecy
Jeremiah 31:15
"This is what the Lord says: "A voice is heard in Ramah, mourning and great weeping, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.""
New Testament Fulfillment
Matthew 2:17-18
"Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: "A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.""
Commentary
Jeremiah's original context was the deportation of Israelites past Ramah to Babylon. Matthew sees a typological echo in Herod's slaughter of infants near Bethlehem, both events involving the violent loss of children.
