Key Theological Concepts

Typology

A method of biblical interpretation where persons, events, or institutions in the Old Testament (types) foreshadow corresponding realities in the New Testament (antitypes). The Passover lamb is a type; Jesus is the antitype.

Key Examples

Passover Lamb → JesusBronze Serpent → CrucifixionIsaac's binding → CalvaryJonah's 3 days → Resurrection

Messianic Prophecy

Old Testament passages understood to predict the coming of the Messiah (Hebrew: Mashiach, 'Anointed One'). These include direct predictions, typological foreshadowing, and psalms of David interpreted messianically.

Key Examples

Direct: Micah 5:2 (Bethlehem)Typological: Exodus 12 (Passover)Psalmic: Psalm 22 (Crucifixion)Servant Songs: Isaiah 53

Substitutionary Atonement

The theological doctrine that Jesus died in the place of sinners, bearing the punishment they deserved. Isaiah 53 is the clearest Old Testament articulation: 'He was pierced for our transgressions.'

Key Examples

Isaiah 53:5-6Leviticus 16 (Day of Atonement)Genesis 22 (Ram substitute)John 1:29 ('Lamb of God')

The New Covenant

Prophesied by Jeremiah (31:31-34) and Ezekiel (36:26), the New Covenant replaces the Mosaic Covenant with one written on hearts rather than stone. Jesus inaugurated it at the Last Supper with his blood.

Key Examples

Jeremiah 31:31-34Ezekiel 36:26-27Luke 22:20Hebrews 8:6-13

The Suffering Servant

A figure in Isaiah 40-55 who suffers vicariously for others. Isaiah 53 is the climax of four 'Servant Songs.' The New Testament consistently identifies Jesus as the fulfillment of this figure.

Key Examples

Isaiah 42:1-4Isaiah 49:1-6Isaiah 50:4-9Isaiah 52:13-53:12

Probability Argument

The statistical argument that the probability of one person fulfilling hundreds of specific prophecies by chance is mathematically impossible, pointing to divine foreknowledge as the only adequate explanation.

The Fourth Cup: Unveiling the Mystery of the Last Supper and the Cross

by Dr. Scott Hahn

Image Books, 2018  ·  4.8/5 (1,393 reviews on Amazon)

Part memoir, part detective story, and part biblical study, this landmark work by Catholic biblical theologian Dr. Scott Hahn reveals how the Last Supper and the crucifixion are not two separate events but one continuous Passover sacrifice. Hahn shows how the traditional fourth cup of wine in the Passover Seder, corresponding to God's promise 'I will take you as my own' (Exodus 6:7), was deliberately left undrunk at the Last Supper and completed on the cross when Jesus received wine vinegar on a hyssop branch and declared 'It is finished.' A transformative read for anyone seeking to understand the deep Jewish roots of the Eucharist.
