Written: ~700 BCFulfilled: ~AD 30 / Ongoing

Isaiah promised the Servant would "see his offspring" after his sacrifice, fulfilled in the community of believers born through his death.

Prophecy & Fulfillment

Old Testament Prophecy

Isaiah 53:10

"Yet it was the Lord's will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes his life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand."

New Testament Fulfillment

John 17:20-21

""My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.""

Commentary

The promise that the Servant would "see his offspring" after death implies resurrection and ongoing life. Jesus's high priestly prayer in John 17 shows his concern for those who would believe through the disciples' message, his spiritual offspring. The church is the fulfillment of this promise.
