Prophecy & Fulfillment
Old Testament Prophecy
Exodus 12:3-7, 46
"Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb for his family... The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect... Do not break any of the bones."
New Testament Fulfillment
1 Corinthians 5:7; John 19:36
"For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed... These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: "Not one of his bones will be broken.""
Commentary
The Passover is the foundational type of Christ's atoning work. Every detail of the Passover lamb pointed to Jesus: the unblemished lamb (sinless Christ), the blood on the doorposts (the blood of the cross), the bones unbroken (John 19:36), and the lamb slain at twilight (Jesus died at the time of the evening sacrifice). Paul explicitly calls Christ "our Passover lamb."
