Written: ~1400 BC→Fulfilled: ~AD 30
The Passover feast, instituted in Exodus, found its ultimate fulfillment in the Last Supper where Jesus reinterpreted its elements in light of his own sacrifice.
Prophecy & Fulfillment
Old Testament Prophecy
Exodus 12:14; Deuteronomy 16:1-8
"This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord, a lasting ordinance."
New Testament Fulfillment
Luke 22:14-16
"When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds its fulfillment in the kingdom of God.""
Commentary
Jesus's statement that the Passover would "find its fulfillment" reveals his understanding of himself as the ultimate Passover. The Last Supper was a Passover Seder in which Jesus replaced the Passover lamb with himself, the unleavened bread with his body, and the cup of redemption with his blood. Every element of the Passover liturgy pointed to him.
