Written: ~1000 BC / ~1400 BCFulfilled: ~AD 30

Both the Passover lamb regulation and Psalm 34 specified that no bones would be broken, fulfilled when soldiers did not break Jesus's legs.

Prophecy & Fulfillment

Old Testament Prophecy

Psalm 34:20; Exodus 12:46

"He protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken. / Do not break any of the bones."

New Testament Fulfillment

John 19:33-36

"But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs... These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: "Not one of his bones will be broken.""

Commentary

The soldiers' standard practice was to break the legs of crucified victims to hasten death. They broke the legs of the two criminals but found Jesus already dead, so they did not break his legs. John explicitly cites this as fulfillment of Scripture, connecting Jesus to both the Passover lamb and Psalm 34.
