Given Vinegar to Drink
Written: ~1000 BC→Fulfilled: ~AD 30
Psalm 69 prophesied that the Messiah would be offered gall and vinegar, fulfilled at the crucifixion.
Prophecy & Fulfillment
Old Testament Prophecy
Psalm 69:21
"They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst."
New Testament Fulfillment
Matthew 27:34, 48
"There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it... Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink."
Commentary
Two separate incidents at the cross fulfilled this prophecy: first, wine mixed with gall (a pain-numbing drug) was offered and refused; second, wine vinegar was offered on a sponge. Both fulfill different aspects of Psalm 69:21.
