Rejected Cornerstone
Written: ~1000 BC→Fulfilled: ~AD 30
The rejected stone that becomes the cornerstone was a messianic prophecy fulfilled in Jesus's rejection by the Jewish leaders.
Prophecy & Fulfillment
Old Testament Prophecy
Psalm 118:22-23
"The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes."
New Testament Fulfillment
Matthew 21:42
"Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures: 'The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?""
Commentary
Jesus quoted this Psalm directly in his confrontation with the chief priests and Pharisees, applying it to himself. Peter also quotes it in Acts 4:11 after the resurrection. The image of the rejected stone becoming the cornerstone perfectly captures the paradox of the Messiah's rejection and ultimate vindication.
