Written: ~700 BC→Fulfilled: ~AD 30
God's self-description as "the First and the Last" in Isaiah is claimed by the risen Jesus in Revelation.
Prophecy & Fulfillment
Old Testament Prophecy
Isaiah 44:6
""This is what the Lord says, Israel's King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God.""
New Testament Fulfillment
Revelation 1:17-18
"When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: "Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever!""
Commentary
The risen Jesus applies to himself the divine title "the First and the Last" from Isaiah 44:6 and 48:12. This is a profound claim to divinity: Jesus, who was dead and is now alive, identifies himself with the eternal God of Israel. The resurrection is the vindication of this claim.
