Isaiah's First Servant Song described the Servant's gentleness, Matthew quotes it to explain Jesus's quiet, compassionate ministry.

Prophecy & Fulfillment

Old Testament Prophecy

Isaiah 42:1-3

"Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations. He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets. A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out."

New Testament Fulfillment

Matthew 12:18-20

""Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations. He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear his voice in the streets. A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.""

Commentary

Matthew quotes Isaiah 42:1-4 in full after Jesus healed many people and told them not to make him known. The Servant's gentleness, not breaking the bruised reed, not quenching the smoldering wick, describes Jesus's compassionate approach to the broken and marginalized.
